Back from Belarus, "The Book Den" is Again Open For Business

First Item? Richard Carvel.

The long plane journeys from Omaha to Chicago to Frankfurt and finally on into Minsk gave me the time to finish the Winston Churchill novel, Richard Carvel, that I had mentioned in an earlier post. (Remember, it's the American Winston Churchill. See the post of February 28th.)

Richard Carvel turned out to an excellent novel and I can certainly understand why it was such a runaway success when it was published in 1899. It is a well-written work, entertaining, adventurous and informative. Those interested in history will be especially endeared to the novel because cleverly woven into the fictional tale are such real-world characters as John Paul Jones. Much of the novel takes place in England and so there is the added treat of learning more of how the American Revolution was viewed by the English.

Richard Carvel
is a great example of the kind of treasure our schools and libraries should be advancing instead of...well, enough said. I recommend Richard Carvel highly.
