Dale Ahlquist, the informative and entertaining President of the ACS was in Omaha today for a speaking engagement at a Catholic businessmen's gathering and a radio interview with KVSS. He also visited Creighton University while he was in town and tried to promote interest in G.K. Chesterton from administrators and individual professors at Omaha's once-Catholic institution. (Don't hold your breath.)
Anyhow, Claire & I gathered up Quint & Carol Coppi and met Dale for lunch down at Rick's Cafe on the Missouri River this afternoon. We had a nice time catching up on what's happening in each other's lives, families, ministries, etc. and we learned that things are really looking good for this summer's 24th annual ACS Conference held, as always, at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. This year the theme of the conference is "2005: A Century of Heretics" and is so designated in order to celebrate the centenary of the publication of one GKC's most provocative books, Heretics. The conference is a splendid blend of spiritual stimulation, friendship and intellectual playfulness -- and the price can't be beat: Free! The Coppis, Tom Jensen and the Hartfords have made it a tradition for several years now and we couldn't recommend it more highly.
So, why not mark your calendars for June 16-18 and head on up to the Twin Cities for a cool, refreshing "Chestertonic" to start your summer right! But, don't wait for the ACS Conference to start enjoying GK Chesterton, the man Dale likes to call "The Apostle of Common Sense." You can begin the fun right now by surfing on over to the American Chesterton Society. There you'll find information about the man, the works, the conference, and the niftiest of literary clubs, the American Chesterton Society. http://www.chesterton.org/
