From City Journal, here's a really interesting article on an area of cultural communication that is...well, almost literature.
Check it out -- it is a longish piece (but well worth your time) written by Harry Stein which covers the rapid rise and increasing success of conservative cartoonists in American newspapers. Mallard Fillmore, Prickly City, and Doonesbury are all subjects of Stein's interest but he even gives a little bit of newspaper cartoon history involving Al Capp and Harold Gray. Very good.
