Of Cures, Commercials and a Con Artist

The #2 bestselling book in the country has acheived that rarified status without the benefit of major reviews, advance sales through bookstore chains, or even an established popularity of the author. Indeed, Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About rocketed to the top of the charts almost solely through the non-conventional sales technique of television "infomercials."

But that's not the half of it. The book (a self-published effort no less) is written not by a doctor or health scientist but instead by Kevin Trudeau, a 42 year old ex-con whose prison sentence was for credit card fraud and who has also had to make out of court settlements with the State of Illinois and the Federal Trade Commission stemming from, respectively, a pyramid-type marketing scheme and selling alternative remedies that don't do the job Trudeau claims.

Apparantly, America's oil shortage doesn't include "snake oil" nor (unfortunately) do we lack plenty of suckers to lap it up.
