One of our favorite Western films is The Shootist, with John Wayne in his last (and one of his most compelling) movie roles. It also starred Lauren Bacall, Jimmy Stewart and Ron Howard with small but wonderful parts played by Richard Boone, Hugh O'Brian, Scatman Crothers, Harry Morgan, John Carradine, Sheree North and Rick Lenz. Therefore, we thought we might also enjoy the Glendon Swarthout novel on which the film was based.Uh...we didn't.
