Notting Hill Napoleons Discuss "Master & Commander"

As always, the Notting Hill Napoleons discussion from last Saturday night was lively, stimulating and helpful. What a great group this is. However, I must admit that the book under discussion (Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander) was far from being a winner with me. There was far too much “ship rigging” to climb through and too many instances of 21st Century attitudes being taken back into the text of this historical novel. The book was okay and John and Barb pointed out that O’Brian gets much better from here on out. Carol didn’t need any convincing; she is already hooked for the whole series. But for myself and Claire – next time we feel like going to sea, we’ll re-read C.S. Forester’s Hornblower books.
